About me

I am a theatre academic with a research specialism in contemporary British and European work. I am particularly interested in political theatres and socially-engaged artistic practice, but I am also keen to find the political elsewhere in performance. I see theatre in dialogue with key debates in political, ethical and cultural theory. I write and teach about new plays, devised work, and performances designed by artists and delivered by non-professionals.

My first monograph, Rethinking Character in Contemporary British Theatre: Aesthetics, Politics, Subjectivity, was published with De Gruyter in 2015. The book was a reworked version of my PhD thesis, which won the biennial prize for doctoral research awarded by the German Society for Contemporary Theatre and Drama in English (CDE). The collection Affects in 21st-Century British Theatre: Exploring Feeling on Page and Stage, which I co-edited with Mireia Aragay and Martin Middeke, was published in April 2021 with Palgrave Macmillan. My next book is provisionally titled The Political Theatre of Tim Crouch and is under contract with Manchester University Press. If you’re interested in reading some of my work, please visit the Writing section on this site.

I currently work as a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance at the University of Glasgow. In the last eight years, I have combined my academic appointments with work as Co-Investigator in three international research projects on contemporary British theatre and ethics/politics. You can find out more about these in Plotting.

I very much enjoy taking part in research events and have presented my research in different formats in the last thirteen years. I am also keen to support colleagues in developing and disseminating their own work. I am a member of the Editorial Board for the new book series Playwriting and the Contemporary: Critical Collaborations, published by Liverpool University Press. Between 2018 and 2022, I was busy co-convening of the Political Performances Working Group at the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR) and editing book reviews for the academic journal Performing Ethos. You can find out more about these activities in Sharing.

Originally from Barcelona, I have lived in London, Dublin, Aberystwyth, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham before landing in Glasgow. I have worked as a radio producer, DJ and broadcast journalist, and in the production of international music festivals. I arrived in theatre studies enjoying the scenic route.
